ABOUT OUR Group
CEIAM is an interdisciplinary center at the Universidad Industrial de Santander with a strong track record in environmental sciences, analytical chemistry, materials science, and sustainable technologies. Its work integrates advanced characterization, environmental monitoring, water treatment, biomass valorization, circular bioeconomy, and the development of functional materials from renewable resources. Through research, graduate education, technological development, and collaboration with communities, industry, and public institutions, CEIAM transforms scientific knowledge into solutions for pollution control, resource recovery, ecosystem protection, and the promotion of sustainable regional development.




RESEARCH Lines
Environmental Biotechnology and Utilization of Biological Resources
This research line explores the potential of microorganisms, including filamentous fungi, yeasts, and bacteria, for the development of processes and products of environmental, food, and industrial interest.
Circular Bioeconomy and Waste Valorization
This research line develops biotechnological, chemical, and physicochemical processes for the comprehensive utilization of agro-industrial waste, residual biomass, and urban and industrial solid waste.
Sustainable Chemistry, Cleaner Production, and Alternative Energy
This research area promotes the design of products and processes that reduce resource consumption, waste generation, toxicity, and risks to human health and the environment.
Advanced Materials for Environmental Applications
This research line focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of functional materials intended for the prevention, monitoring, and remediation of pollution.
Environmental Quality, Resource Treatment, and Management
This research line integrates the assessment, monitoring, treatment, and management of water, air, and soil resources, considering their relationships with ecosystems, public health, and territorial development.
Electrochemical Methods for Environmental Sustainability and Water Quality
This research line focuses on the design, development, optimization, and validation of electrochemical methodologies for the detection, quantification, monitoring, and remediation of contaminants in water, soils, and biological systems.
Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors for Health and Agrobiotechnology
This research line focuses on the design, development, optimization, and validation of electrochemical sensors and biosensors for the rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of biomarkers of interest in human health, animal health, agricultural production, and plant systems.

WATER QUALITY
Assessment
Support for the monitoring, assessment, and management of natural, drinking, industrial, and wastewater resources through the determination of relevant parameters to establish water quality, contamination levels, and suitability for different uses.
Services Included:
- Determination of physicochemical parameters.
- Sample collection and in situ measurements.
- Sample preparation through digestion and incubation procedures.
- Quantification of metals using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES).
- Wastewater assessment and monitoring of treatment processes.
Generation of information for impact studies, environmental control, and regulatory compliance.
Methodologies:
Standardized methods for water analysis and analytical quality assurance procedures.

BIOMASS AND AGRO-INDUSTRIAL
Waste Characterization
Determine the physical, chemical, and compositional properties of biomass and agro-industrial waste to assess their potential for conversion, energy recovery, material production, or incorporation into circular bioeconomy processes.
Services Included:
- Physical and chemical characterization of biomass.
- Determination of moisture content, ash content, extractives, and structural components.
- Evaluation of properties relevant to energy, chemical, biotechnological, and materials applications.
- Analysis of metals and inorganic elements.
- Application of instrumental methods and calculation of compositional parameters.
Comparison of raw materials, waste streams, biomass fractions, and derived products.
Methodologies:
ASTM, NREL, TAPPI, NTC, and AOAC standards and procedures, selected according to the nature of the sample and the objective of the analysis.
