ABOUT OUR Group
Since its establishment in 2006, the Gynecology and Obstetrics Research Group (GINO) (COL0020731, MinCiencias) has supported the research training of students enrolled in the Gynecology and Obstetrics specialization program. The group also includes a student research group as a platform for developing research skills among undergraduate students. Its research lines have emerged from a commitment to contributing to the solution of health problems affecting women at different stages of life, particularly in the maternal and perinatal fields. GINO collaborates closely with other academic units, healthcare institutions, and international organizations. The group believes that teamwork accelerates the research process and enriches it by incorporating ideas from diverse perspectives.

RESEARCH Lines
Early Prediction of Preterm Birth
Our team is committed to shifting the prediction of preterm birth to the first trimester by integrating clinical data, cervical measurements, and biochemical markers to identify pregnant women at risk and initiate timely and individualized interventions aimed at reducing that risk. In this area, we have already generated and published our own findings, which are currently undergoing validation prior to clinical implementation.
Translational Research for the Prediction of Preeclampsia, Placental Dysfunction, and Fetal Growth Restriction
This research line focuses on the study of pathophysiological mechanisms, biomarkers, and diagnostic tools that enable the early identification of pregnant women at risk of developing preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and other manifestations of placental insufficiency, contributing to the advancement of maternal–fetal precision medicine.
Our research includes the evaluation of uteroplacental perfusion using uterine and fetoplacental artery Doppler ultrasonography, the characterization of maternal and cerebral hemodynamic changes through fetal artery Doppler ultrasonography, and the analysis of angiogenic and antiangiogenic biomarkers, particularly the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio. It also investigates the interaction among the maternal microbiome, systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, vascular alterations, and abnormal placentation.
Placenta Accreta Spectrum
This research line focuses on generating knowledge for the early identification, prenatal diagnosis, and risk stratification of pregnant women with placenta accreta spectrum. It integrates clinical and translational research aimed at studying pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, and diagnostic tools based on ultrasonography, Doppler imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, biomarkers, and emerging technologies.
In addition, it promotes the development of predictive models and technological innovations to optimize clinical decision-making, improve maternal–fetal outcomes, and strengthen the evidence-based management of this condition.
Gynecologic Endoscopy and Reproductive Medicine
This research line is dedicated to generating scientific knowledge on gynecologic disorders that affect women throughout their lives. Its main areas of interest include abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, and endometriosis, with an emphasis on the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, as well as their impact on reproductive health and patients’ quality of life.
Perinatal Infection
At the onset of the Zika epidemic, we established a multidisciplinary team and, through the findings of a funded research project, contributed to advancing the understanding of the natural history of the disease, particularly its fetal involvement. This work has been supported by scientific publications and collaborative studies aimed at determining the short- and long-term effects of intrauterine infection.
