ABOUT OUR Group

Molecular Immunology and Epidemiology Research Group (GIEM) addresses health challenges related to infectious diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases at both the regional and national levels. The group studies host–pathogen interactions in diseases such as Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, and viral respiratory diseases. It has also established a research area in antimicrobial resistance, investigating CRISPR systems associated with antibiotic resistance in clinically relevant bacteria.

Among its research on chronic non-communicable diseases, the group focuses on the study of anemia in student populations and the investigation of preneoplastic conditions associated with mature B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, GIEM performed more than 56,000 PCR tests in the department of Santander. Between 2023 and 2026, the group presented more than 25 papers at national and international conferences, with several receiving awards. It collaborates with institutions such as the Fundación Cardiovascular de Colombia, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, and Johns Hopkins University. In addition, the group trains scientists at the master’s and doctoral levels.

RESEARCH Lines

This research area studies how the immune system responds to infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi) and how this response can, paradoxically, contribute to tissue damage and disease.

Studies microorganisms—bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—at the molecular and genetic levels, analyzing their internal mechanisms, their interaction with the host, and the processes that determine their pathogenicity.

Focuses on the study of blood, its components, and the disorders that affect them, as well as the scientific and clinical principles governing the transfusion of blood and blood components.

This research area focuses on understanding and manipulating the genetic information of organisms at the molecular level.

Focuses on identifying molecules or specific structures—proteins, receptors, enzymes, or signaling pathways—that can be selectively targeted by a drug or therapy to combat a disease.

This research area studies parasites that affect both humans and animals, including protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites.

Focuses on identifying and characterizing which genes are activated or silenced when the body faces an infection, inflammation, or autoimmune disease. To achieve this, researchers analyze biological samples (blood, tissues) from patients and healthy controls, compare gene expression profiles, identify genetic variants associated with increased susceptibility or protection against disease, and study the molecular mechanisms through which these genes regulate the immune response.

EXTENSION Services

Flow Cytometry

The LCI Flow Cytometry Service is designed to support research activities by providing specialized scientific and technical consulting to both internal and external users. The service includes the design and optimization of multicolor panels, the development of sample preparation protocols, technical support during the implementation and configuration of flow cytometry assays, as well as data analysis and interpretation for research projects.
