about our Group
The UIS Human Genetics Research Group (GENEHUIS) generates and consolidates knowledge in human genetics with an impact on public health, social equity, and peacebuilding in Colombia. The group conducts high-level research in clinical, molecular, forensic, and population genetics, addressing both prevalent conditions and rare diseases affecting the Colombian population.
GENEHUIS is equipped with laboratory facilities for DNA sequencing, PCR, and bioinformatics analysis, as well as its own biobank. The group maintains collaborative partnerships with the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the State University of Rio de Janeiro, and the University of Santiago de Compostela.
The group also contributes to the training of new researchers through the graduate programs offered by the School of Medicine and its Student Research Group.

Molecular Epidemiology of Cancer
Studies the genetic and molecular factors associated with the development and progression of cancer in Colombian populations, with an emphasis on the identification of risk variants.
Genetic Etiology of Cardiovascular Diseases
Investigates the genetic basis underlying diseases of the heart and blood vessels, contributing to early diagnosis and a better understanding of their inheritance patterns within the population.
Chromosomal Fragility
Analyzes alterations in genome stability associated with chromosome breakage syndromes, with implications for the diagnosis of genetic disorders and cancer predisposition.
Genetics of Inborn Errors of Metabolism
Characterizes the molecular basis of inherited metabolic disorders, supporting timely diagnosis and the development of clinical management strategies.
Population Genetics
Examines the genetic diversity and structure of Colombian populations, with applications in forensic genetics, human identification, and the understanding of regional evolutionary history.
Obesity Metabolism
Explores the genetic and metabolic factors that contribute to the development of obesity, seeking to understand its multifactorial etiology within the Colombian population context.
